From the sales side, the unexpected one was you going house to house canvassing the neighbors — we’re selling the house down here, if you know anybody, let me know. That I wasn’t expecting, because we didn’t talk about it. I’ve never had another Realtor do that.
I think we listed a good strategic number, a realistic number, to allow the market to dictate the price it was willing to pay for the house. Had we gone in too high, that keeps some of the competition down. People tend to shy away from it if they take a look and think that it’s overpriced. I think price reasonably, as you guided — and then the negotiations that you had with those who were submitting offers got us into a value that honestly I wasn’t expecting.
I’d be moving to Japan for a couple of years … and the timeline is very, very vague. If this process had continued to drag on, or we just couldn’t find the right buyers, or it wasn’t marketed correctly, this could have turned into a major headache for me — at a time when I had to travel to a new country in a new language that I’m not so familiar with. Trying to find buyers and close the house from the other side of the planet would have been significantly difficult. I wasn’t expecting it to go as quickly as it did. A lot of that credit is to you.
It worked well the first time. So when it came time to sell the house, I had no question or doubt whatsoever. I was coming back to you.
My house was originally listed by another broker. It didn’t sell, and I was very disappointed. So I decided to try to sell it myself. That turned out to be much harder than I expected. It was like a roller-coaster ride — I had a lot of inquiries, even some offers, and met with countless Realtors who wanted to list my property. I first heard of Diallo through my stepmother, who was a Realtor in Pennsylvania. I’d asked her for some guidance, and she said that there’s a referral network, and she reached out through her referral network and found Diallo. I believe she actually interviewed him first to identify if he would be a good fit for me, and then she passed on the information.
Despite the fact that I initially had concerns you were just focused on New York City, you did understand the valuation of Long Island, and were able to also help me to understand the valuation of Long Island, so I could put forth an offer that was reasonable and, at the end, successful.
I got a house at what I feel was a reasonable price, in a very difficult market, and it’s hard to imagine how things could have gone better. Looking back, the process went smoothly and the guidance was good, so that we were able to put forth that compelling offer and win — and we weren’t the highest bidder in a market where people were having bidding wars. The package that we put together was the correct one. … There were over 20 offers on this property when we bought it.
I never felt pressured that you just wanted to sell a place. I had gone through the pre-qualification process to understand how much money I could spend on a house — but I never felt pressured to spend up to that limit, and I didn’t. You listened to what I was actually looking for, even at a time that I wasn’t really sure of myself what I was looking for. I think you were able to tease out what the best solution for me was.
My boyfriend and I interviewed several real estate agents in NYC and Diallo stood out due to his professionalism, real estate knowledge and courteous. Buying a property in NYC can be a daunting process especially after hearing horror stories from friends and family. Having Diallo as the real estate agent made this process a breeze.
